'It's like they never miss a pass': Swansea's Galbraith continues contest with City.

Ethan Galbraith can't help but smile as he remembers the thrilling closing stages of Swansea's remarkable turnaround triumph against Nottingham Forest in the EFL Cup. That match culminated with Galbraith temporarily wearing a supporter's spectacles following the post-goal scrum.

As the match entered added time, Galbraith rattled the woodwork with a long-range effort from outside the box, and his teammate quickly hammered in the rebound before racing off toward the home end to mark the goal, with the crowd congregating around the players.

Stunning Reversal

The result completed an unbelievable turnaround given Swansea had found themselves down 2-0 during the final 45 minutes. Amid the celebrations, there was some minor mishaps. He shared, "There was a supporter shouting out and Josh Key and I were thinking: 'What's he on about here?' Then we spotted the glasses. It was a funny incident putting them on. We are on the pitch as players but we're people, too, so to have a bit of craic with the fans is always good."

Pep Guardiola Test

The victory secured a fourth-round game at home against Pep Guardiola's side on Wednesday, a club Galbraith came close against at the equivalent round of the FA Cup with Leyton Orient in February. He had arguably the best view when his former team took the lead in spectacular fashion, with Jamie Donley's volley from about 45 yards going in via the bar and the City goalkeeper. Many argued that it was deemed an own goal.

"You would have expected they would've credited him for taking the effort on from that far out," commented Galbraith, who started in midfield before moving to right defensive wing after Orient changed tactics. That meant facing off against Jack Grealish, with whom he traded tops, and the winger was among the Manchester squad who paid tribute to the way his former team played positively.

Opponent's Class

"Physically they are exceptional but even the simple things and simple things, they can just execute repeatedly," he explains. "It seems as if they always find their target and they understand how to control and neutralize a game. You can feel you're all right and then suddenly they will just fizz a pass through a line without you even noticing. You have to be alert every second of the game. It demands a strong mentality and attention just to remain competitive."

Welsh Transition

The club sought to acquire Galbraith in January and beat off competition to secure him in the summer in a seven-figure transfer. He established himself as a popular figure across multiple campaigns at Leyton Orient and has rapidly replicated that in Wales. At Orient he reunited with Richie Wellens, who earlier gave Galbraith his first extended run in first-team action on loan at a League One side from United. Then came a spell at lower division the Manchester club, before he permanently left Manchester United.

Learning Curve

"I was perhaps a slightly green going into senior level. I think many athletes would say youth team games is very different. Sometimes it feels like the ball is moved without serious challenge. There are limited hard challenges. Once you start playing first-team football you have to adjust fast."

Country Call-ups

He has shown that development for club and country, performing well for his national side, who could still reach the global tournament next summer via the knockout phase and for whom he has started the recent fixtures, including both legs games against Germany. Ian Baraclough, Galbraith's previous international manager, gave him the highest praise, saying he was Northern Ireland's "creative maestro" given how he handles the football and his knack for a killer pass.

Early Days

It has been quite the ride for the youngster from the Queens Park estate in Glengormley, just outside the capital, who grew up watching his father, Stuart, also a central player, play for a local club.

Old Trafford Memory

Galbraith's sole appearance for Manchester United came in the away trip in 2019, a Europa League trip to the Kazakh capital, where they featured on an artificial pitch and the arena covering was sealed owing to the weather of bitter cold. "This represented a lengthy journey and it was cold out there," he comments, chuckling. "The days leading up, myself and quite a few of the young lads trained together, so that assisted our preparation. Just to travel with the first team and make an appearance at the end was unbelievable."

Departing Old Trafford

What was the challenge was it to move on from Old Trafford, the club he transferred from aged his mid-teens? "The decision proved relatively straightforward, because I got to the stage where I realized I couldn't establish myself at the senior squad. I'm extremely thankful for the experience gained but it got to the point where I felt I had to take a different path, drop down the leagues and play professional soccer. Now I'm gradually climbing the ladder."

Life in Swansea

It is mid-afternoon at Swansea's Fairwood training base but Galbraith has an appointment at the early evening: a learner's exam, another step towards getting on the road. Prior to relocating to the local area, the 24-year-old was a constant rider in Swansea's nicknamed player transport, a small coach driven by team personnel, the transport team, which ferries players to and from practice and games.

"My companions include Gonçalo Franco, another squad member, an Ivorian player – a former passenger used to be in it but has begun using his own car. It's pleasant to interact with the guys but I'm hoping to be the following person out of the minibus and behind the wheel. The Portuguese player likes to pull a few pranks; he's always up to all sorts."

Supporter Connections

While playing for Leyton Orient, Galbraith would travel alongside fans on London's Central line after beginning his trip at Brentwood. "I tried|I attempted|My aim
